Panoramic View of Hiroshima Ruins with Surviving Buildings and Mountain Backdrop, Japan, Post-Atomic Bombing
This panoramic photograph documents central Hiroshima following the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945. A row of reinforced-concrete buildings survives amid an otherwise obliterated landscape, illustrating how structural design determined which buildings withstood the blast while the surrounding wood-frame city was almost entirely destroyed by fire and shockwave.
