Two American soldiers escort a civilian-dressed captive through Alpine terrain in the days following Germany's surrender in May 1945. The album's labeling identifies the captive as Julius Streicher, the Nazi Gauleiter of Franconia and publisher of the virulently antisemitic newspaper Der Sturmer, who was seized by American forces near Waidring, Austria, on 23 May 1945. Streicher was subsequently tried at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal, convicted of crimes against humanity, and executed in October 1946. Photographs like this preserve the eyewitness record of Allied troops rounding up senior Nazi leadership in the war's final chaotic weeks. Project: 218246
