Airmen Resting Beneath Aircraft Wing with Red Cross Marking, Ie Shima, WWII
This photograph shows U.S. servicemen resting in the shade beneath the wing of an aircraft marked with a Red Cross, likely a medical evacuation transport, on the airfield at Ie Shima. Part of the 345th Bomber Group collection, the image reflects daily life on this small Pacific island airbase, notable also as the site where war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed in April 1945.
