This photograph shows a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber of the 345th Bombardment Group — nicknamed the "Air Apaches" — on the airfield at Ie Shima during the final months of World War II. From this forward base in the Ryukyu Islands, the group flew low-level strike missions against Japanese shipping and installations, and ground crews like those pictured here kept the aircraft flying under demanding wartime conditions.
