Japanese Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" Surrender Envoy Bomber on the Airstrip at Ie Shima, 19 August 1945
On 19 August 1945, Japanese envoys flew from Japan to Ie Shima aboard two Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" bombers specially marked with green crosses on white paint, per Allied instructions, so they would be recognized as surrender delegation aircraft and not attacked. From Ie Shima the envoys continued to Manila to receive the terms of surrender from General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters. This photograph, taken by an American serviceman on the ground, captures one of the aircraft surrounded by curious GIs — an eyewitness view of the opening act in Japan's formal surrender.
