Handwritten Caption Card: 'Jap Pilot Walking Away from Plane (Betty) After Landing at Ie Shima,' August 19, 1945
This handwritten caption, dated August 19, 1945, documents one of the most dramatic moments witnessed by American airmen at Ie Shima: the arrival of Japanese surrender envoys aboard a Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty' bomber, specially painted white with green crosses. The delegation landed en route to Manila to negotiate the terms of Japan's capitulation with General MacArthur's headquarters staff, just days before the formal end of the Second World War. This caption card, from a 345th Bomb Group photo album, preserves a firsthand eyewitness account of history in the making. Project: 218235
