The Snapshots in Time Collection
Gallery: Part 5
Drawn from a personal photo album kept by a member of the 345th Bombardment Group, these snapshots record life at the "Air Apaches" forward base on Ie Shima in 1945, from muddy squad tents and barracks construction to coastal bluffs, wrecked aircraft, and a mission photograph taken over the Japanese coast. Handwritten album captions preserve the airmen's own voices, humor, and crew names alongside the images.
