The Don Englebreston Collection
McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II of VMFA-122, Tail Code DC, Bureau Number ending 1478, Vietnam War Era
A McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II of Marine fighter attack squadron VMFA-122, identifiable by the squadron's DC tail code, the stencilled unit designation and the Bureau Number ending 1478. VMFA-122 flew Phantoms from bases in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, providing close air support to Marine ground units and flying strike and escort missions. This copy print is filed in the collection with a caption identifying it as the aircraft in which a pilot named Kurt was killed. That attribution comes from the collection itself; nothing within the photograph records the loss, and the image is preserved here as it was received, as a memorial as much as a record.
