Prized for its long loiter time and heavy ordnance load, the A-1 (nicknamed "Spad") became legendary in the close air support and combat search-and-rescue role, escorting downed airmen to safety under the call sign "Sandy" and supporting covert cross-border missions flown by MACV-SOG.
