A U.S. Air Force officer known as "Wylie" holds up a bent aircraft component marked "6 Dec 69, A/C 734" outside squadron living quarters at a Southeast Asia air base in 1970. Salvaged parts like this one were common keepsakes among Vietnam-era aircrew, each bent barrel or shrapnel-scarred fitting standing in for a memorable mission or a close call survived.
