He wears the orange A-1 Skyraider 'party suit' that became his signature at these reunions, carrying aviator wings, a 602nd Fighter Squadron device, a 'You've Been Had by a Spad' patch and a Yankee Air Pirate insignia. The propeller-driven A-1 Skyraider -- universally called the Spad -- flew rescue escort and close air support in Southeast Asia, and Skyraider detachments such as Operating Location Alpha Alpha at Da Nang devoted a large proportion of their sorties to covering MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams operating across the border.
