A single propeller-driven attack aircraft, consistent with a Douglas A-1 Skyraider, runs above an unbroken cloud deck at twilight with its navigation lights burning. Flying under the callsign SANDY, Skyraider crews frequently launched in darkness to be overhead a downed airman at first light, then orbited for hours suppressing ground fire and controlling the rescue helicopters.
