A modern road map of Savannakhet Province, Laos, held as the unannotated location reference for the search and rescue case filed under the aircraft callsign Fat Capper 07. The event it documents took place approximately one mile south of the village of Ban Tang, visible at centre right. The ground shown here, along the Route 9 and Route 23 corridor running east toward the Vietnamese border, formed the spine of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the Laotian panhandle and was among the most heavily defended airspace of the Vietnam War. Contemporary maps of this kind are used by researchers and recovery organisations to reconcile wartime coordinates and callsigns with present-day place names on the ground. Project: 219850
