A dense white smoke cloud boils up from the sea, photographed from a passing aircraft with part of its own wing or pylon intruding at the lower left. The opaque, rapidly billowing character of the smoke is typical of a white phosphorus marker, the standard means of marking a target or position for following strike aircraft. Over water, such markers also served for range work and for marking a position at sea. Flat haze has flattened the horizon almost to nothing, a common condition over the coastal waters of Southeast Asia. Project: 219827
