Aerial View Past an Aircraft Wing over Cratered Forested Mountain Terrain, Southeast Asia, Vietnam War Era
Seen past the wing of an aircraft, forested mountains stretch away under heavy tropical haze. Across the valley at right lies a dense field of small pale circles - a cratered landscape consistent with repeated air strikes on the road and trail networks threading these hills. Interdiction of such routes occupied a large share of the air effort in Southeast Asia, with Douglas A-1 Skyraiders, forward air controllers, and fighter-bombers working the same valleys day after day. The pale wing in the foreground is not in the dark camouflage typical of a Skyraider, suggesting this frame was taken from a transport or utility aircraft.
