Air-to-Air View from a Cockpit: Wingman Silhouetted Against the Low Sun over Coastal Islands, Southeast Asia, Vietnam War Era
Photographed from the cockpit of one aircraft, a wingman flies silhouetted against the low sun above a scattering of mountainous coastal islands. The blunt-nosed, straight-winged profile is consistent with a Douglas A-1 Skyraider, the piston-engine attack aircraft that flew close air support and "Sandy" rescue-escort missions throughout the Vietnam War. Views like this, snapped over the canopy rail on a transit leg at dawn or dusk, are among the most personal images that combat aircrew brought home. Backlighting and low-resolution copying leave the aircraft unidentifiable by markings. Project: 219827
