Forested mountains fall directly into the sea along the central Vietnamese coast, their summits buried in low cloud, photographed past the wing tip and external tank of a passing aircraft. Weather of this kind was an operational hazard in its own right: cloud sitting on the ridges closed the passes and valleys to low-flying aircraft and made close air support and rescue work along the coastal ranges dangerous or impossible.
