A-1 Skyraider Wingman and Ordnance-Laden Wing Over a Coastal Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, ca. August 1970
Photographed from the cockpit of a Douglas A-1 Skyraider over the coastal plain of the Republic of Vietnam about August 1970, this slide shows a wingman in loose formation and the photographer's own ordnance-laden wing. The three finned bombs under the wing carry long fuze-extender probes, designed to detonate the weapon above ground level against troops in the open. Donald L. Engebretsen flew A-1s with the 56th Special Operations Wing's Operating Location Alpha Alpha at Da Nang, a detachment whose Sandy crews escorted combat rescue missions and supported MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams. The sprawling airfield visible below, set beside a river and backed by the Annamite range, is very likely their home base. Project: 219603
