Loaded Underwing Weapons Stations of an A-1 Skyraider with 'Remove Before Flight' Streamers, circa March 1970
The loaded left wing of a Douglas A-1 Skyraider in its revetment, photographed by one of its pilots in about March 1970. Every weapons station is filled and every station is safetied: the red 'Remove Before Flight' streamers hanging in a curtain across the frame are attached to arming wires and safety pins that must be pulled before the aircraft can drop anything. Their sheer number gives a sense of the Skyraider's extraordinary carrying capacity, greater than that of a Second World War heavy bomber. Photographs like this one were taken by pilots of Operating Location Alpha Alpha at Da Nang, a detachment of the 56th Special Operations Wing. Project: 219603
