Base Chapel with A-Frame Roof and Service Notice Board, USAF Installation, Republic of Vietnam, circa November 1969
Base chapel, USAF installation, Republic of Vietnam, circa November 1969. Built with a steep A-frame roof to shed monsoon rain and clad in whatever sheet metal was to hand, chapels of this pattern stood on airfields across Southeast Asia. The notice board by the walk carried the week's schedule of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish services; loudspeakers under the eaves carried them further. The whitewashed rocks, banana plants and flowering shrubs are the unmistakable landscaping of an American base. Photographed by Donald L. Engebretsen during his tour flying A-1 Skyraiders. From his collection. Project: 219603
