Declassified command chronology, Marine Aircraft Group 16, September 1970. This single typewritten page is the official Marine Corps account of Operation Tailwind, the MACV-SOG Hatchet Force raid into southern Laos. It records the insertion of an Army company 'deep behind enemy lines in a highly classified and denied area,' the mixed Marine, Army and Air Force air package that carried and covered them, the two-day fighting extraction under what the writer calls 'an astronomical amount of enemy resistance,' and the loss of two helicopters without loss of personnel. Its guarded, statistical language is the contemporary counterpart to the personal accounts of the men who were there, including medic Gary Michael Rose, awarded the Medal of Honor for this operation in 2017.
