Douglas A-1 Skyraider, nose detail. Named 'Lieutenant America' and marked with a Stars-and-Stripes peace sign, this preserved Skyraider is photographed with its Wright R-3350 radial engine running at a modern commemorative gathering. Nicknamed the 'Spad,' the piston-engine Skyraider was flown by U.S. Air Force special operations squadrons in Southeast Asia, where its long loiter time and heavy ordnance load made it the aircraft of choice for close air support and for the 'Sandy' combat search-and-rescue mission.
