The Don Englebreston Collection
Two CH-53 Sea Stallion Helicopters in Formation Over Mountainous Terrain, Southeast Asia, ca. 1970
Two CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopters cross hazy mountain country in Southeast Asia around 1970, photographed from a companion aircraft. The frame is filed with the Operation Tailwind material in the Donald L. Engebretsen collection, alongside images attributed to Joe Driscoll of Marine squadron HML-367, whose Cobra gunships flew under the callsign Scarface. During Operation Tailwind, 11-14 September 1970, CH-53s of HMH-463 carried a MACV-SOG Hatchet Force deep into southern Laos and extracted it under fire, escorted by Scarface Cobras and Air Force A-1 Skyraider Sandys. Every man on the ground came out; the raid later produced a Medal of Honor for medic Gary M. Rose. Project: 219488
