This annotated topographic map documents Operation Tailwind, a MACV-SOG cross-border raid into Laos from 11 to 14 September 1970. Marked in red are the insertion and extraction points near the village of Chavane and the loss site of a USMC CH-53 helicopter during the extraction. The operation, led on the ground by Captain Gene McCarley, later became the subject of national controversy after a retracted 1998 media report. Project: 219482
