Medal of Honor week, 22 October 2017. A speaker addresses a gathering of Operation Tailwind veterans and guests on the eve of the White House ceremony at which Gary Michael Rose received the Medal of Honor. Rose, a Special Forces medic, treated dozens of wounded over four days during the September 1970 MACV-SOG Hatchet Force raid into southern Laos, working while wounded himself and remaining on the last helicopter out. His award came forty-seven years after the action, once the operation's classified status permitted recognition. Tailwind was supported throughout by U.S. Air Force A-1 Skyraiders, the aircraft flown by Donald L. Engebretsen, from whose collection this photograph comes. Project: 219446
