Captain (Ret.) Gary M. 'Mike' Rose, a U.S. Army Special Forces medic, received the Medal of Honor on October 23, 2017, for his extraordinary heroism during a classified MACV-SOG reconnaissance mission into Laos in September 1970 — the mission later known as Operation Tailwind. Despite his own wounds, Rose repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to treat and evacuate wounded teammates over four days of sustained combat.
