A helicopter extracts reconnaissance team members 'on the string' -- suspended by rope beneath the aircraft -- during Operation Tailwind, the September 1970 MACV-SOG cross-border operation into Laos. When enemy fire and terrain prevented a landing zone touchdown, extraction teams were sometimes hoisted out and flown to safety dangling beneath the helicopter, one of the most harrowing techniques used in Vietnam-era special operations.
