Circa 1970, South Vietnam. Three helicopter aircrewmen in Nomex flight suits and survival vests pose beside the nose of a Bell AH-1 Cobra gunship on a red-laterite forward strip, a second Cobra parked behind them and forested ridges beyond. Only thirty-eight inches wide across the fuselage, the Cobra was the first purpose-built attack helicopter, carrying a chin turret and stub-wing rocket pods in place of the improvised armament of earlier gunships. This slide is filed with material relating to Operation Tailwind, the September 1970 SOG Hatchet Force raid into Laos, which was covered by Marine Cobra gunships of HML-367 'Scarface'; the crewmen and their unit are not identified on the slide.
