CH-53 Sea Stallions and AH-1 Cobra Gunship Staging During Operation Tailwind, Laos, 1970
Helicopters stage during Operation Tailwind, a September 1970 MACV-SOG operation that sent a company-sized force into Laos to disrupt North Vietnamese logistics along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. CH-53 Sea Stallion transport helicopters, seen here on the ground amid rotor wash and dust, carried the assault force, while AH-1 Cobra gunships like the one in the foreground provided armed escort. Tailwind remains one of the most extensively studied SOG operations of the war. Project: 219425
