The Don Englebreston Collection
Scanned Book Page 419 from a Misty Fast FAC Memoir: Rescue Under an A-1 Smoke Screen and the Section 'Gomer Mechanics and Their Friends'
A page from a published memoir of the Misty Fast FACs - the F-100F crews who hunted targets along the Ho Chi Minh Trail - preserved in the OLAA files of the Donald L. Engebretsen collection. In the passage at the top, a rescued pilot looks out of a Jolly Green helicopter and mistakes for fog the smoke screen that A-1 Skyraiders have laid across the valley to blind enemy gunners. That screen was the Sandy mission, flown by pilots like Engebretsen with the 56th Special Operations Wing at Da Nang. The section that follows, 'Gomer Mechanics and Their Friends', records the unglamorous ritual of getting airborne: maps, a crew van, a G-suit with a frozen water bottle in the pocket, and a .38 revolver loaded with tracer.
