Douglas A-1 Skyraider on the runway, Tennessee air show, 7 June 2014. Designed at the close of the Second World War as a single-seat carrier attack aircraft, the Skyraider went on to serve through Korea and Vietnam, valued above all for its endurance and its enormous external load. U.S. Air Force A-1s flew close air support, supported covert reconnaissance teams, and under the callsign 'Sandy' led the rescue of downed airmen. Only a handful remain airworthy today. This aircraft is preserved and flown privately in East Tennessee. The photograph is from the Donald L.
