P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt Warbirds in Formation Flypast, Tennessee Air Museum Air Show, June 2014

Restored World War II fighter aircraft — a P-51 Mustang bearing invasion stripes and a P-47 Thunderbolt — fly in formation during a vintage warbird air show. Invasion stripes, first applied to Allied aircraft ahead of the June 1944 Normandy invasion, helped aircrews and ground forces quickly distinguish friendly planes during the massive aerial operations of D-Day. Aircraft such as these remain flying today thanks to dedicated restoration and preservation efforts by warbird museums and private owners. Project: 219310
