North American P-51D Mustang, restored and marked as an Eighth Air Force fighter. The code letters G4 identify the 362nd Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group, and the name below the canopy honors Captain Jesse Frey. Two swastika markings on the nose represent aerial victories, and the small plate under the windscreen credits the crew chief and armorer who kept the aircraft flying, a courtesy widely observed on wartime fighters. The Mustang's combination of the Packard-built Merlin engine and a laminar-flow wing gave it the range to escort heavy bombers from England to Berlin and back, a capability that transformed the daylight bombing campaign in 1944. Note that the serial in the fuselage data block, 44-74009, differs from the number painted on the fin, 415267; such differences are common on restorations, where the airframe's actual identity and the aircraft it commemorates are not the same.
