Two A-1 Skyraider Veterans Wearing 'OLAA' Name Badges at a Commemorative Airfield Event, 2 May 2015
Skyraider veterans, 2 May 2015. Two former members of Operating Location Alpha Alpha (OLAA) - the U.S. Air Force A-1 Skyraider detachment based at Da Nang under the 56th Special Operations Wing - stand together on an airfield ramp at a commemorative gathering in the Great Smoky Mountains foothills. Their event badges pair the Vietnam Service Ribbon with the unit abbreviation OLAA; the veteran at right wears a shirt bearing the 'Lieutenant America' Skyraider nose art, the marking carried by an airworthy A-1 that attended the event. Nearly half of OLAA's combat missions were flown in support of MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams, and the detachment also stood 'Sandy' alert for the rescue of downed aircrew. Photograph by Donald L.
