The restored Douglas A-1H Skyraider 'LIEUTENANT AMERICA', photographed at a warbird event in May 2019 with its pilot strapped in and the canopy open. The Stars-and-Stripes peace sign on the cowl and the era-correct Southeast Asia camouflage recall the aircraft's Vietnam War lineage. Piston-engined and slow in an age of jets, the Skyraider could carry a heavier bomb load than a Second World War heavy bomber and loiter for hours over a target, which made it indispensable for close air support and for the 'Sandy' combat search and rescue mission, where Skyraider pilots suppressed enemy fire and shepherded helicopters in to recover downed airmen.
