Douglas A-1 Skyraider "Lieutenant America" Taxiing at Airshow, May 2019
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider, nicknamed "Spad" by its crews, was a single-engine, propeller-driven attack aircraft that served with distinction during the Vietnam War, providing close air support and escorting search-and-rescue helicopters. Prized for its heavy weapons load and ability to loiter over the battlefield far longer than jet aircraft, the Skyraider became a beloved workhorse of the air war. This example, marked "Lieutenant America," is preserved and flown today at airshows in tribute to its Vietnam-era service. Project: 219252
