Airworthy Douglas A-1H Skyraider 'Lieutenant America' Taxiing, 3-4 May 2019
Douglas A-1H Skyraider 'Lieutenant America,' 3-4 May 2019. One of a small number of airworthy Skyraiders, this single-seat A-1H taxis in accurate Southeast Asia camouflage with an external fuel tank and stores on its underwing pylons. The Skyraider carried up to 8,000 pounds of ordnance on fifteen hardpoints and could remain over a target for hours - qualities that made it indispensable in Southeast Asia for close air support of special-operations teams and for the 'Sandy' combat search-and-rescue mission, in which A-1 pilots located downed aircrew, suppressed enemy fire and escorted the rescue helicopters in. Preserved and flown today at commemorative events. From the collection of Donald L. Engebretsen, A-1 pilot, OLAA Da Nang detachment. Project: 219252
