Douglas A-1 Skyraider in Dark Navy-Style Finish, Head-On at Low Level on a Runway, 3-4 May 2019 Event

A Douglas A-1 Skyraider head-on at runway level during a commemorative event on 3-4 May 2019, wearing the dark overall blue-grey finish of U.S. Navy service rather than the Southeast Asia camouflage of its later Air Force career. Red-banded inert stores hang beneath the wings, and the red-and-white warning stripes on the slowly turning propeller blade tips are visible above the cowling. The photograph is taken through severe heat shimmer rising off the asphalt, which softens and distorts the whole frame - an honest record of long-lens airfield photography on a hot day. The aircraft is very likely N39606 (BuNo 139606), the A-1H flown by Neal Melton, which appears repeatedly across the event folders in this collection. Project: 219252
