A candid portrait from August 2006, almost certainly of Mel Swanson - who as a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel took command of Operating Location Alpha Alpha, the A-1 Skyraider detachment at Da Nang, on 15 June 1970. His surviving Form 5 flight record for November 1970 lists the Skyraider tail numbers he flew and a career total of 3,632.9 flying hours. Here, decades later, he stands smiling in a pool hall with a cue in hand and a Jeep patch on his shirt. Personal photographs from the 'and later' portion of a veteran's file are as much a part of the historical record as the wartime images, documenting the long lives that followed the year of combat.
