Fragmentation Damage to the Vertical Fin of A-1 Skyraider Tail Code TC / 55[2], Southeast Asia, circa 1969-1971
Circa 1969-1971, Southeast Asia. The vertical fin and rear fuselage of a Douglas A-1 Skyraider, tail code TC and number 55 with an indistinct final digit, shows the aftermath of a low-level pass over defended ground: some forty fragment punctures have torn through the camouflage to bare metal, and the fin leading edge is ragged near the tip. The tail code TC identifies a 1st Special Operations Squadron aircraft. Skyraider pilots flying Sandy rescue escort and special operations support worked deliberately low and slow, trading speed for the ability to loiter over a downed airman or a team in contact, and accepted damage like this as the price.
