The Skyraider - a propeller-driven attack aircraft flying in the jet age - was universally nicknamed the 'Spad' after the French fighter of the First World War, and its squadrons adopted the joke wholesale, painting a 1918 biplane complete with star-in-roundel wheel markings on their unit sign. Partly hidden behind him are a lieutenant colonel's commander board and a second sign beginning '56T', consistent with the 56th Special Operations Wing's Operating Location Alpha Alpha at Da Nang, the detachment with which Donald L.
