Two Servicemen Beside the 'Home of the Spads' Revetment Sign, A-1 Skyraider Unit, Southeast Asia, circa 1968-1970

Southeast Asia, circa 1968-1970. Two servicemen pose beneath the hand-painted sign marking a Douglas A-1 Skyraider revetment area, 'Home of the Spads.' Crews nicknamed the piston-engined A-1 the 'Spad' after the French SPAD fighters of the First World War, a joke about flying an aircraft that seemed a generation out of time in the jet age, and units embraced the name, painting the old biplane on their signboards. The narrow board below marks an assigned aircraft parking slot for a lieutenant colonel. From the John Weinig collection, part of the Donald L. Engebretsen archive. Project: 219080
