The A-1 Skyraider, nicknamed the 'Spad' by its crews, was a propeller-driven attack aircraft prized during the Vietnam War for its long loiter time, heavy ordnance load, and ability to absorb battle damage. Air Force Air Commando squadrons flew the A-1 in close air support, forward air control, and 'Sandy' rescue escort missions, often protecting downed airmen deep in hostile territory.
