Douglas A-1 Skyraider in flight, Southeast Asia, circa 1969-1970. Silhouetted against a hazy sky, the aircraft's profile is unmistakable: a tall square fin, a deep fuselage, a heavy radial engine and a wing crowded with pylons. Beneath it hangs a large centerline fuel tank, giving the endurance that made the Skyraider so valuable; A-1 crews could remain overhead a ground team or a downed airman for hours after faster jets had to leave. The stores under the wings are rocket pods and finned ordnance. From the photographs of A.
