Aircrew Gathering Inside a Squadron Bar, OLAA Da Nang, Gary Hawes Collection, circa 1969-1970
Da Nang Air Base, circa 1969-1970. Aircrew of the OLAA Skyraider detachment gather in a wood-panelled squadron bar. On the wall hangs a print of a First World War biplane - a deliberate nod, since these pilots called their propeller-driven A-1s 'Spads' after the fighters of 1918. Squadron bars served a purpose beyond drinking: they were where new pilots absorbed tactics from experienced ones, where losses were absorbed, and where the culture of a unit was made. From the donated collection of Gary Hawes. Project: 219033
