A-1 Skyraider Escort Aircraft Photographed from CH-53 Jolly Green Giant Rescue Helicopter, November 1970
A U.S. A-1 Skyraider attack aircraft flies escort in this air-to-air photograph taken from the window of a CH-53 "Jolly Green Giant" rescue helicopter over Southeast Asia in November 1970. Skyraiders, nicknamed "Sandy" in this role, provided armed escort and suppressive fire for combat search and rescue helicopters retrieving downed aircrew during the Vietnam War, a mission that made the propeller-driven Skyraider one of the most valued aircraft of the conflict despite its age.
