Pilots Sitting Alert in the Operations Shack, OLAA A-1 Skyraider Detachment, Da Nang, ca. 1970
Waiting. Three U.S. Air Force pilots in Nomex flight suits pass the hours in the operations shack of the OLAA A-1 Skyraider detachment at Da Nang, ca. 1970. The plywood walls, the two black rotary field telephones, the charts pinned to the wall and the headset on the desk are the whole apparatus of sitting alert: crews dressed and ready, aircraft armed and cocked outside, everything hanging on whether one of those phones rang. Skyraider crews pulling 'Sandy' combat search and rescue alert could sit like this for an entire shift, or be airborne within minutes. From the Gary Hawes OLAA series. The print has faded to a warm amber cast with age. Project: 219029
