The Don Englebreston Collection
Aerial View of a Stilt-House Fishing Village and Its Boat Fleet, Coastal Vietnam, circa March 1970
A Vietnamese fishing village photographed from the air around March 1970: houses raised on piles over the tideline, a fleet of sampans and wooden junks moored along the bank, coconut groves behind, and rice paddies stretching inland. Photographs like this one - taken through the canopy on a transit to or from the field - are among the few images in a combat pilot's collection that record the country itself rather than the war. Donald L. Engebretsen flew A-1 Skyraiders with the OLAA detachment at Da Nang; villages of this kind lined the rivers and lagoons of Quang Nam province beneath his daily flight path. Project: 218965
