Battle-Damaged USAF HH-53 Rescue Helicopter on Ramp, Southeast Asia
This U.S. Air Force HH-53 'Super Jolly Green Giant' rescue helicopter sustained severe damage to its forward fuselage and landing gear, likely the result of a hard landing or hostile fire during Southeast Asia combat operations. Aircraft of this type, flown by Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadrons, were the primary means of retrieving downed aircrew and, at times, extracting MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams from deep within hostile territory. The photograph documents the aftermath as maintenance and safety personnel cordoned off the wreck for inspection. Project: 218965
