The doorway of 1st Lieutenant Donald L. Engebretsen's quarters at a Southeast Asian air base, photographed by him in about October 1969. A red nameboard above the door carries his name; the door itself is marked with a small aircraft silhouette, the word SPADS and a squadron emblem, and hung with a mosquito net against the tropical night. 'Spad' was the nickname airmen gave the Douglas A-1 Skyraider and, by extension, to themselves. Engebretsen flew with Operating Location Alpha Alpha at Da Nang, a detachment of the 56th Special Operations Wing that devoted nearly half its missions to supporting MACV-SOG reconnaissance teams. Photographs of a pilot's own billet, identified by name, are unusually direct evidence of daily life in the war. Project: 218965
